If you’ve been researching Disneyland, you’ve probably seen the words Lightning Lane pop up everywhere. The good news? It’s not nearly as complicated as it sounds.
Lightning Lane is Disney’s system that allows guests to access shorter queues for select attractions by purchasing and booking options ahead of time, helping you spend less of your precious park day waiting in line.
Lightning Lane can be a fantastic tool when used strategically, especially for popular attractions and busy park days, but it’s not a magic wand that replaces good planning. Understanding how it works before your trip will help you decide where it fits into your Disney strategy and where you’re better off saving those vacation dollars for something else.
How to Get Lightning Lane Access
You’ll need to:
- Buy a valid Disneyland ticket either as a standalone or as part of a resort package.
- Make a park reservation.
- Open the Disneyland app after entering the park.
- Purchase Lightning Lane Multi Pass for the day (if you didn’t purchase it with your ticket).
- Start selecting Lightning Lane return times, one at a time.
Magic Tip: Keep an eye on your app. If your next reservation is more than two hours out, you can make another selection at the two hour mark. Your app will tell you exactly when.
Lightning Lane Single Pass
Headliner rides in each park are available for Lightning Lane separately from the multipass.
Single Pass is needed for:
- Radiator Springs Racers at Disney California Adventure Park
- Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance at Disneyland Park
Lightning Lane Premier Pass
This is your ultimate “keep it simple” option with maximum flexibility. Of course, it’s also the most ultimate priced of the three options. We’re looking at several hundred dollars per guest.
With Premier Pass, you can enjoy one-time access to each available Lightning Lane attraction at both Disneyland and California Adventure in a single day without needing to select arrival windows ahead of time.
Real Talk: Is It Worth It?
Prices vary based on date and demand:
- Lightning Lane Multi Pass access starts around $25/day per person
- Lightning Lane Single Pass costs $15–$25 per ride, per person
- Lightning Lane Premiere Pass access starts around $300/day per person
If you want to avoid wasting hours in line, yes. Especially if you’re traveling with littles, limited time or just hate sweating in queues. You’re buying back chunks of your day and a bit of your sanity.
On the other hand, if you’re ok with a leisurely day and not in Dumbo or Die touring mode, you can definitely stick with standby. Chat with your planning biddy or travel agent (hi…should be me!) about the crowd patterns during your trip, and see if you can swing it without, or maybe just grab it for a couple of days.
PhotoPass photos are included on the days you purchase Lightning Lane, so if you would normally purchase those, you can Disney math that into the equation, too.
