With Ms. Rona staying way past her welcome this year, this normally jet set crew settled for a local staycation, of sorts, in Broken Bow, OK. Mere minutes from the Oklahoma/Arkansas state line, Broken Bow is a small respite in the corner of Oklahoma centered around Beavers Bend State Park. Now, I personally am not super outdoorsy, but a luxury cabin I could get onboard with even if just to change the four walls around me. With that, I set to finding a wooded oasis for the MMM crew to hole up in for a few days this summer and happened across Towering Timbers, a cabin rentable via Creative Escapes.

The Cabin

Towering Timbers had five bedrooms, four kings each with a private bathroom and a bunk room with four twins. Only one bedroom is downstairs, so if you have young ones you’d prefer not climbing stairs or someone in your party with mobility issues, keep this is mind. There wasn’t much in the way of closet space. I believe only one of the upstairs bedrooms had a closet. The other rooms had armoires or dressers. This would’ve been an issue on a normal vacation for us, but since we had mostly lounge clothes, we were all pretty happy living out of suitcases or tote bags.

The kitchen was well-appointed and had everything we needed for the week. Well, almost everything. There was literally one roll of paper towels. And apparently that was all we were allotted in a house that sleeps 20. When we asked for a restock, we were brought a half-used roll from maintenance. So, maybe put those on your packing list or make use of the towels and washing machine. Toilet paper was equally scarce, but they were quick to replace that. This was our first time cabin living, so I’m not sure if that’s the norm. Aside from paper products, we found everything from butter spreaders to corn cob handles to a slow cooker that accidentally made its way home with us. Oops! No worries, though, Creative Escapes was very understanding, and we dropped it in the mail.

Each room boasted a television, as did the back porch. The wi-fi was reliable, and if I were on a writing retreat or work trip, I’d be good to go. A fire pit, hot tub, game corner, pool table and corn hole set rounded out the leisure options at the cabin. Oversize yard games were listed, but we weren’t ever able to find them. Maybe those made it home with someone else.

As an aside, we also have a sneaking suspicion the owners of Towering Timbers are part of the Duggar brood after happening upon some notes left for maintenance and some decorative initials around the house. If anyone knows, let us in on the secret!

Beavers Bend

As far as activities outside the cabin, we didn’t do too much that put us in close proximity to those outside our family. Most of our excursions took us to “The Dip” area of the lake for wading, splashing and exploring. We were there during the week and found this area fabulously empty except for a youth group one afternoon. Luckily the overlap wasn’t long. While there are some other swimming areas and watercraft rentals available, we were content with our Springfloats and a cooler of sandwiches and drinks.

Broken Bow & Hochatown

These little communities surrounding Beavers Bend are pretty cute and offer lots of fun restaurants, shops and experiences. That said, we didn’t do much because of social distancing. A couple gift shop stops, pizza lunch at Mountain Fork Brewery and ice cream at Okie Girls were the extent of our treks to town. That said, we’d love to return post COVID and check out the rest of the area. On that note, masks were hit and miss throughout, and Broken Bow happens to be an Oklahoma COVID hot spot, so keep that in mind. Not surprising since half of my local circle has been to Broken Bow at some point this summer.

Although we didn’t experience much of the local life, we’d absolutely visit the area again! Whether for another socially distant staycation or for a chance to really get the local flavor, it’s an easy jaunt to get out of the ordinary and relax a bit. And if you’re reading, rentables, we’d absolutely ADORE working with you! Consider collaborating with travel agents. We’re happy to start that trend with you! 😉
