Dining

‘Ohana

The second floor of the lobby is home to ‘Ohana, a family favorite, with Mickey, Pluto, Lilo and Stitch hosting breakfast, an all-you-can-eat family style meal.  Dinner is meat on sticks.  Post-pandemic, dinner is all-you-care-to-enjoy meat in bowls. And that famous bread pudding (seriously, don’t skip it).  In lieu of characters, dinner hour brings live entertainment and dancing.

Kona Café and Kona Island

Next door to ’Ohana, Kona Café offers a varied menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner, making it an easy choice when everyone wants something a little different. My personal favorite? The Tonga Toast at breakfast — it’s a Poly classic for a reason! Nearby, Kona Island keeps things casual with grab-and-go pastries and coffee in the morning and fresh sushi offerings in the evening.

Capt. Cook’s

One of the few 24-hour spots on property, Capt. Cook’s is a convenient stop for a quick meal, mug refill or late-night snack. And yes, Tonga Toast is here too! If I’m being totally honest though, I don’t find myself stopping by quite as often since the removal of the serve-yourself Dole Whip machine. 😉

Pineapple Lanai

Pineapple Lanai is the Poly’s home for that iconic Disney treat: Dole Whip! The machine may no longer be self-serve, but honestly, that might be a good thing because now we’re a little less likely to speed-run a cup of frozen pineapple straight into a brain freeze. 😉 Grab your favorite Dole Whip creation (I’m partial to the float) and enjoy it while soaking in the tropical resort atmosphere.

Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto

Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto is one of Disney’s most iconic lounges, bringing a little bit of Disneyland magic to the Poly. This interactive tropical hideaway serves up creative cocktails, light bites and plenty of surprises, with the atmosphere shifting to 21 and over after 8:00 P.M. It’s a must-do for anyone looking for a fun Disney night out. Want the treats without fighting for seats? Check out Trader Sam’s Tiki Terrace just outside.

More Dining

The Poly also has plenty of spots to grab a drink, relax and soak in the atmosphere. Tambu Lounge is a great place to enjoy a cocktail, grab a drink before dinner at ’Ohana or just take in the lively energy of the Great Ceremonial House. Oasis Bar & Grill offers poolside drinks and casual bites at the Oasis Pool, while Barefoot Pool Bar keeps the tropical vibes going with refreshing drinks and snacks at the Lava Pool. Over at the tower, enjoy a tropical escape with waterfront views and South Pacific-inspired flavors at Wailulu Bar & Grill.

Around the Resort

Take your time exploring the halls, artwork and hidden details throughout the resort, then step outside to discover viewing areas where you can watch animals roam the savanna throughout the day.

From cultural displays and storytelling to Cast Members sharing the traditions behind the art and design, there’s so much to discover beyond the parks. Give yourself permission to wander a little here. The details are half the fun.

More Magic Tips

A few tips go a long way toward making the Polynesian your own personal paradise.

• Second-floor rooms at the Poly don’t have true balconies. The upper-level “balconies” are more of a railing area designed to keep you from falling out, so keep that in mind if you’re dreaming of sitting outside with your morning coffee. Personally, we’re team patio all the way!

• The beach is a great place to watch Magic Kingdom fireworks, but you don’t have to fight the biggest crowds. The main beach area can get busy, so wander a little farther down the shoreline for more space and a chance to avoid some of the bungalow obstruction.

• You can walk to the Transportation and Ticket Center instead of taking the monorail loop to Epcot. Depending on your room location, it’s about a 10–15 minute walk and can save you time compared to riding the resort monorail loop.

• Pack a pool bag because seating at the Lava Pool can be hard to snag. I’ve always thought the pool area feels a little small for the size and popularity of the resort, so having your essentials ready is helpful if chairs are limited. Saving chairs for extended periods is discouraged, and Cast Members do monitor unattended loungers and tables.

• Use a travel agent who knows the Poly inside and out. The Polynesian is close to my Samoan heart, and my heritage gives me an extra appreciation for the details and storytelling woven throughout the experience. Our Take on the Polynesian Village Resort

Full disclosure: this is where my Poly fangirl bias is blatant. I’m going to 100% enable you here because this resort has earned a very special place in our Disney story. Is it expensive? Yep. The Poly can be a serious splurge, and I’m not going to pretend otherwise. But if you’re asking me whether I think it can be worth it? Also yep.

For a first Disney trip, I think the Poly is hard to beat. There’s just something about walking into the Great Ceremonial House, taking in the atmosphere and then stepping out to see Cinderella Castle across Seven Seas Lagoon that makes you feel like you’ve reached your Disney dream. The location is prime, especially for families spending a lot of time at Magic Kingdom, because a midday break, pool time or little kid (or, honestly, grown-up) nap is actually doable without eating up half your day.

And, of course, the vibes. The Poly has vibes for daysssss. The beautiful grounds, the music, the relaxed atmosphere and the overall feeling of being somewhere special are what make this resort stand out. Is it the practical choice for every trip? Probably not. Is it the one I’ll happily talk someone into when it fits their vacation style and budget? Absolutely.
